Every spring, repot the fig tree into a container that is 2 inches bigger than the plant’s present pot. The bottom of the planter should have drainage holes. Fill the new pot with 2 inches of all-purpose potting soil. By pressing on the pot from the outside to loosen the earth and roots, you can remove the fig tree from its current container.
Place the tree on its side with the pot upright, and then carefully remove it. While being careful not to rip any of the roots, use your fingers to remove soil clumps from the roots and pull the larger roots free. Put it in the new container and continue putting fresh potting soil in it.
Put the newly potted plant on a tray and fill the pot with water until the drainage holes are full. After allowing it to absorb as much moisture as it can, remove the extra water. Depending on how humid your environment is, you may need to water the fig more frequently. In between waterings, let the fig tree dry out for one or two days. Put the plant in a location with moderate to strong lighting.
During the growing season, fertilise the fig tree. Start when you see new growth in the spring. Once a month, combine all-purpose liquid fertiliser with the tree’s regular water. The fertiliser should be diluted by half. When you notice that the ficus isn’t exhibiting robust new growth in the fall, stop.
To get the size and shape you want for your plant, prune it as you see appropriate. Trim the top growth immediately above a leaf node or leaf scar using small pruners. To make the appearance bushier and more compact, remove some of the stems that sprout from the main branches.
Check for scale insect infestation on the fig tree. If you notice a sticky material on the branches, you will know this. Since the insects blend in with the plant’s bark, it is difficult to discern the scale, but it will be represented by little bumps. To get rid of the scale, soak a cotton swab in alcohol and apply it to the pimples.
Dust the leaves of your fig tree using a damp, lint-free cotton cloth. To prevent accidental removal, hold each leaf by the base with one hand as you wipe it clean. If you don’t have the patience or want to clean it more quickly, you may also place the entire plant in the shower and wash it with room-temperature water.
